ABUJA — Nigeria and the United States have intensified diplomatic engagement aimed at addressing Washington’s designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) over religious-freedom concerns.
The renewed engagement is focused on finding practical measures to address the concerns behind the designation while strengthening cooperation between both countries on security, counterterrorism and the protection of religious freedoms.
The CPC designation has remained a sensitive issue in Nigeria-US relations, particularly amid international concerns over attacks and insecurity affecting communities across the country.
Nigerian authorities have consistently maintained that the country’s security challenges should not be reduced to religious persecution, stressing the complex nature of terrorism, banditry, communal violence and other forms of insecurity.
The latest diplomatic efforts are therefore expected to provide an avenue for both countries to clarify their positions, improve coordination and work towards conditions that could ultimately lead to the reversal of the CPC designation.
The development also signals continued engagement between Abuja and Washington as both sides seek to deepen bilateral relations while confronting Nigeria’s broader security and humanitarian challenges.
