The aftermath of the 2026 Osun governorship election has continued to generate debate over Nigeria’s political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, with guests on the latest edition of the Oriontimes Podcast offering divergent perspectives on the opposition’s prospects.
Speaking during the post-election analysis, Comrade Yahaya Mojeed and Lagos-based veteran journalist, Adelu Taiwo, examined the outcome of the Osun election, the performance of the major political parties and the implications of the result for the 2027 presidential contest.
During the discussion, one of the positions advanced was that Peter Obi remains predominantly a regional political leader, while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is the only opposition figure currently capable of mounting a serious challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The guests also analysed the political significance of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election, voter behaviour, opposition strategy and the possibility of fresh political alliances ahead of 2027.
Adeleke secured 511,067 votes to defeat the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes, while the ADC candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third with 17,180 votes.
The discussion further explored whether Adeleke’s victory should be viewed strictly as a victory for his party or as part of a wider opposition momentum ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The Oriontimes Podcast post-election edition therefore provides a postmortem of the Osun contest while examining the lessons from the election and what they could mean for the evolving political landscape ahead of 2027.
The views expressed on the podcast are those of the invited guests and do not necessarily represent the editorial position of Oriontimes.
