President Donald Trump has directed that homeless people in Washington, D.C., be removed from the streets, warning that those who refuse to leave could face eviction and possible arrest. Speaking after passing several encampments on his way to a golf course, Trump said the nation’s capital must be “cleaned up” and restored to “the pride of the nation.”
Under the plan, officials are exploring relocating homeless individuals to other facilities outside the city. Trump also signaled that the National Guard could be deployed to assist in the operation, which he framed as part of a broader push for public order.
“This is our capital,” Trump said. “It should reflect the greatness of America, not be overrun by tents and crime.”
Critics argue the move criminalizes poverty and fails to address the root causes of homelessness, such as lack of affordable housing, addiction treatment, and mental health services. Advocacy groups have warned the policy could result in the mass displacement of vulnerable residents without providing sustainable solutions.
The directive does not specifically target immigrants, despite online confusion. While Trump has continued to advance strict immigration measures nationally, the “leave or jail” warning in this case is aimed solely at homeless individuals within Washington, D.C.
