BREAKING: Osun 2026; Popular APC Gubernatorial Aspirant Quits Race

 

The political landscape of Osun State ahead of the 2026 governorship election took a dramatic turn on Saturday as the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, announced his withdrawal from the gubernatorial race.


Basiru, widely regarded as one of the leading aspirants within the APC, made the declaration during the official commissioning of The Alubarika Movement House in Alekuwodo, Osogbo.


Addressing supporters, party members, and political stakeholders, the former Senate spokesperson revealed that his decision followed extensive consultations with key leaders of the party,  including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.


“After deep reflection and consultation with our leaders, particularly President Bola Tinubu, I have decided to step down from the 2026 gubernatorial race,” he stated.




His withdrawal comes as a surprise to many political observers, given his influence, political structure, and growing acceptance within the party in recent months. The move is expected to reshape internal dynamics within Osun APC as the race for the party’s ticket intensifies.



While Basiru did not indicate whether he would be endorsing another aspirant, his decision has already ignited speculations about possible alignments and the party’s strategic direction ahead of 2026.
