Many Nigerians turned their attention yesterday to Arsenal vs Chelsea, not out of apathy for national duty, but because it was the Super Eagles, not the Super Falcons, playing on the same day as the Carabao Cup semi-final. And once again, the choice reflected a painful truth: the team’s talent alone no longer commands trust or awe. The spectacle of club football, with its rhythm, precision, and drama, suddenly felt safer than the familiar disappointment of watching the national team falter.

The Super Eagles are trapped in a recurring illusion: the belief that gifted individuals can carry the weight of a nation. Time and again, Nigerian football assembles stars with immense pedigree, only for the team to falter at critical moments. Talent, while abundant, has failed to translate into composure, confidence, and clarity when it matters most. Expectations are high, hearts are invested, yet the team seems unable to respond to the pressure of collective hope.

Take Samuel Chukwueze, whose journey through Villarreal once tested his resolve. A player of such calibre reminds us that individual brilliance does not automatically lift the soul of a country. Football at the highest level demands more than flair; it demands mental readiness, resilience under pressure, and an understanding of the moment’s gravity. When a player hesitates under a spotlight, the nation feels it — every pause, every falter resonates far beyond the pitch.



Penalties tell a story few are willing to acknowledge. The player’s posture, hesitation, and body language at the spot reveal more than skill; they reveal confidence, or the lack of it. And yet, despite these clear signs, the team continues to rely on raw talent alone, without a conscious evaluation of who can deliver under pressure. A well-taken penalty is not merely a kick; it is the convergence of nerve, preparation, and belief. Miss it, and the cracks appear.



Nigeria is blessed with talent across its states and leagues. Players capable of competing at the highest level exist in abundance. But the Super Eagles’ struggles point to gaps in selection, preparation, and psychological readiness. A coach’s role is not only to manage tactics but to understand who can thrive when the nation’s expectations weigh heaviest. Those entrusted with decisive moments, especially penalties must be mentally and technically equipped.

This is not the Eagle Nigerians pray for. Until the team addresses its recurring failures, at penalties, in decisive moments, and in mental preparedness, the illusion will remain. Talent may win applause, but courage, composure, and insight win hearts, lift nations, and create legends.

The Super Eagles must do better. The nation is waiting.

Assassination Attempt: Police can’t deny what’s on their desk, says Amotekun boss
