The ballot boxes opened, the queues formed, and in Iwo, democracy found its rhythm in the quiet footsteps of voters.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Iwo, Ayedire and Ola-Oluwa Federal Constituency, Mr Ademola Adedapo, has commended the peaceful and orderly conduct of the ongoing Osun State governorship election.
Adedapo spoke with journalists shortly before casting his vote at Polling Unit 1, Isale-Oba Ward 1, Iwo, where he described the exercise as largely free from intimidation and harassment.
According to him, voters had been allowed to exercise their civic rights peacefully, with no unnecessary confrontation at the polling unit.
“As you can see, things are going on very peacefully. Nobody is being bullied, nobody is being harassed. As long as you have your voter’s card, you can join the queue, wait for your turn, cast your vote and go home,” he said.
The APC chieftain explained that he came to his ward not only to participate in the democratic process but also to observe developments and ensure that the exercise proceeded without rancour.
He also commended officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security personnel deployed to the area, saying their presence had helped maintain order and confidence among voters.
Beyond the excitement of competition, however, Adedapo urged all political parties and candidates to remember that elections are ultimately about the people and the future of the state.
He called on contestants to accept the eventual outcome of the poll, regardless of personal or partisan expectations.
“We should accept the outcome of the election. Somebody must win,” he said.
While expressing confidence in the chances of his party, Adedapo said he remained optimistic that the APC would emerge victorious at the end of the contest.
“I know and I’m sure that our party, the All Progressives Congress, is going to win,” he added.
As voters across Osun continue to cast their ballots, the election remains a contest of choices, hopes and competing visions. In Iwo, at least at the polling unit where Adedapo voted, the ballot was being allowed to speak louder than the noise of politics.
The Osun governorship election is taking place across the state’s 30 local government areas, with security personnel deployed to maintain peace and reports of orderly voting in several polling locations.
