On this Democracy Day, I had intended to rest my pen. I wanted to leave the fate written on the walls of history to speak for itself. I thought perhaps the sacrifices of those who fought for democracy were enough testimony. Yet, in the final hour, a thought stirred within me, compelling me to write a message to all of us who have come together to form this sovereign nation called Nigeria. My message is particularly for those who believe that the business of Nigeria lies in the hands of a powerful few. Perhaps they are influenced by what the German sociologist Robert Michels described as the "Iron Law of Oligarchy" ,the tendency for power to concentrate in the hands of a small elite. Looking at our politics, our institutions, and our economy, one may be tempted to believe that the destiny of Nigeria is determined only by those who occupy powerful offices and influential positions. On the eve of his birthday, Tioluwani Joseph faced a heartbreak that shook him to his core. Yet, even in the face of personal sorrow, he remains a symbol of resilience, a reminder of the silent battles many face and the unyielding strength required to push through them.
In life, there are moments that feel as though they could break you. Tioluwani, much like many of us, has experienced those moments. And yet, it is in the breaking that we often find our true strength. Like me, Abioye Tosin Lawrence, he knows what it means to face the darkness of life's trials, those gut-wrenching moments when the weight of the world feels unbearable. Yet, in each of those moments, Tioluwani has demonstrated a courage few can understand.
His story, much like mine, is one of endurance. His pain, though unique to him, echoes a shared human experience. It speaks to the resilience of the heart, how, even when broken, it continues to beat, even when bruised, it remains strong. Tioluwani has faced life's harshest winds with his head held high, determined to not just survive, but to overcome.
What makes his journey even more powerful is how he chooses to rise above his circumstances. Tioluwani doesn't let his story define him, but rather, he uses it to fuel his purpose. Through the trials, through the tears, through the unspoken fears, he shows the world that strength isn't just about overcoming adversity; it's about finding peace within the chaos, and finding light even in the darkest of places.
On this day, though it comes with its own heartbreak, we celebrate Tioluwani's resilience. We honor his spirit, a spirit that refuses to be broken, no matter what life throws in his path. His strength is a beacon to all who have walked similar roads, reminding them that they are not alone in their struggles.
