Adeleke Jump Ship? Why Defecting To APC May Secure Office But Destroy Trust

In the shifting sands of Nigerian politics, it’s no surprise that His Excellency, Governor Ademola Adeleke, might consider jumping ship from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). On the surface, it seems like a smart political calculation, arguably the most convenient route to securing a second term under the cover of incumbency and federal support.


But political convenience often comes at a cost. And in this case, the cost could be the very soul of Osun’s democratic progress.


A defection of that magnitude would not just be a personal decision, it would be a political earthquake. It would rattle the foundations of both the PDP and the APC. Loyal stakeholders in both camps, those who have toiled, sacrificed, and remained committed through thick and thin would feel betrayed and sidelined. 


The sense of alienation could trigger mass defections, deep resentment, and factional chaos. In the aftermath, it is not the PDP or APC that may benefit, but smaller parties like the SDP or ADC, which could emerge as unexpected havens for the disenchanted.


Governor Adeleke must ask himself: Is political survival worth political implosion?


More importantly, is the quest for a second term worth the erosion of trust and the perception of opportunism?


Let us be clear, democracy thrives on credible opposition. When ruling parties and opposition lines are blurred for self-preservation, we lose the very essence of competitive governance. It becomes not a contest of ideas, but a scramble for personal safety.


That’s why I strongly urge Governor Adeleke to remain where he is, the PDP. The same platform that gave him the mandate, the same party in which thousands placed their trust, should not be discarded like a used ladder. Let him stay, fight, and prove himself in the arena.


If he wins in 2026, it will be a victory well-earned. If he loses, he would have gone down standing tall, without compromising his principles or destabilizing the fragile political balance of Osun State.


Nigeria’s democracy does not need shortcuts. It needs statesmen.


Let’s deepen democracy, not dilute it.

Assassination Attempt: Police can’t deny what’s on their desk, says Amotekun boss
