In response to recent denigrating remarks made about Nigeria on social media, Mrs. Adunni Olowogunle has cautioned against the growing trend of citizens branding the nation as “shameless.”

The controversy began when an online commentator known as D-Mockratic Pen posed the question: “How did Nigeria become shameless? Does this matter really concern Nigeria as a whole?” In his submission, he argued that unlike in countries such as Russia or China, where citizens would rarely utter such disparaging remarks, Nigerians must learn to separate frustrations with leadership from assaults on the country’s collective image.

“Sir, with due respect, let us not attack the nation’s image but rather direct our anger toward those who are truly irresponsible in the system,” he wrote, warning that the impact of such statements hits even harder when voiced by foreigners.

Responding, Mrs. Olowogunle praised the intervention, stressing that Nigerians must recognize their role in shaping how the country is perceived globally. “A combination of reigning unnecessary curses on our country is a useless effort. Foreigners are facing hell in foreign lands, yet my people are destroying their own fatherland. Nigeria is not as bad as some citizens are claiming. Nigerians themselves are the enemies of Nigeria. Our bad behavioral pattern is following us anywhere we migrate to.”

Her comments highlight a broader debate on patriotism, responsibility, and how citizens should balance legitimate criticism of governance with the duty to uphold national image in the global community.
