 Oriontimes Newsroom | October 19, 2026

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 11 Command Headquarters, Osogbo, AIG Bassey S. Ewah, PSC(++), FCAI, MSPSP has warned members of the public in Osun and Oyo States against the dangerous practice of scooping petrol or other petroleum products from overturned or accidented tankers, urging them to prioritise their safety and avoid preventable loss of lives.

The warning follows a fire incident involving a petrol tanker at the Feesu area along the Iwo–Osogbo Express Road in Osun State, on 17th September 2026, at about 1130 hours. Upon receiving information about the incident, the Divisional Police Officer, Iwo Division, promptly mobilised a team of police personnel to the scene, secured the area and simultaneously alerted the Fire Service for immediate intervention.

The AIG commended the officers and men of the Osun State Police Command for their swift response, proactive efforts in securing the scene and keeping members of the public at a safe distance from the burning tanker.

The AIG’s warning also comes against the backdrop of the tragic tanker-related incident in Benin City, Edo State, which underscores the grave dangers associated with approaching accidented fuel tankers and attempting to scoop their contents. Such acts can result in devastating fires, explosions, severe injuries and multiple fatalities.

He assured residents of Osun and Oyo States of the continued commitment of Zone 11 Command to proactive policing, public safety and effective collaboration with other emergency response agencies to prevent avoidable tragedies.
