At the Osun State Assembly Complex in Osogbo, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, has sounded a strong warning over what he described as a calculated and troubling pattern capable of undermining the integrity of the electoral process in the state.
Addressing journalists, the Speaker disclosed that the Assembly had received official notice of the sudden resignation of the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He noted that the development, in isolation, might not have raised suspicion, but was accompanied by more concerning reports of an ongoing redeployment of key electoral personnel across Osun State.
According to Egbedun, the redeployments are expected to affect critical positions including administrative secretaries, electoral officers, assistant electoral officers, and ICT personnel, all of whom play pivotal roles in ensuring the transparency and credibility of elections.
He observed that such a widespread reshuffling has not been witnessed in Ekiti State, which precedes Osun in the electoral calendar, raising pressing questions about the motive behind the developments.
“Why Osun?” the Speaker queried, emphasizing the unusual nature of the situation.
Egbedun further revealed that there is credible intelligence allegedly linking these developments to the influence of Gboyega Oyetola, a claim that heightens political tensions and underscores the sensitivity of the unfolding scenario.
Despite the concerns, the Assembly maintained that no level of administrative maneuvering can override the will of the people.
“The people of Osun State are politically conscious, vigilant, and resolute. No calculated effort, no matter how structured, can suppress their democratic choice,” Egbedun asserted.
The Speaker also disclosed reports of alleged attempts within the Ife/Ijesha Senatorial District to compromise the electoral process by positioning partisan actors in strategic roles such as returning officers and supervisors. He described such moves as unacceptable and warned that they would be firmly resisted.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic principles, the Assembly called on all officials deployed for electoral duties in Osun to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act, stressing that the sanctity of the electoral process must not be compromised.
Egbedun further appealed to the international community, development partners, and election observers to closely monitor developments in the state, noting that vigilance remains critical at this time.
He concluded by reiterating the unwavering demand of the people of Osun State: a free, fair, and credible election.
“Osun State is politically aware, vigilant, and deeply committed to democratic values. The people will not accept any action that undermines the credibility of the electoral process,” he said.
