Police Arrest Sokoto Political Figure Over Alleged Banditry Links

 


Security operatives in Sokoto State have arrested Sirajo Ahmad Dan Liman, a prominent political figure and deputy imam at the Central Jumu’ah Mosque in Kangiye, Gwadabawa Local Government Area, over alleged ties with bandits operating along the Tangaza–Niger Republic border.

According to reports, Dan Liman was accused of supplying motorcycles and essential goods to criminal groups terrorizing communities in the region. Media sources also alleged that about ₦47 million was discovered in his bank account, believed to be proceeds of collaboration with the bandits.

Beyond his religious duties, Dan Liman is said to be the ward chairman of a political party in Atakwanyo Ward and also serves as the secretary of the forum of political party chairmen in Gwadabawa LGA. He is widely known in his community for delivering Ramadan sermons and deputising for his father, the Chief Imam, during Friday prayers.

However, the Sokoto State Police Command has disputed parts of the circulating reports. Police spokesperson Rufai Ahmed confirmed the arrest but clarified that the suspect is “not a clergyman” and insisted that no such ₦47 million was traced to his account.“


The suspect was arrested, yes. But he is not a cleric, and there is no record of such funds being discovered in his account,” the police statement read.

The arrest has stirred reactions across Sokoto, with residents demanding thorough investigations and transparency in handling
