Angola Honours Murtala Muhammed, Rekindles Nigeria’s Legacy in Africa’s Liberation

 


In a powerful reminder of Nigeria’s historic leadership in Africa’s emancipation struggle, the government and people of Angola have bestowed a posthumous national honour on Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed.


The recognition was conferred during a high-profile ceremony in Luanda over the weekend, as part of events marking Angola’s 50th Independence Anniversary. The celebration, filled with symbolic tributes and continental pride, highlighted the decisive role Nigeria played in supporting Angola during its liberation years.



Angola also extended honours to two other distinguished Nigerians, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Professor Ibrahim Gambari, former Minister of External Affairs, both revered for their diplomatic bravery and unwavering support for anti-colonial movements across Africa.


According to Angolan officials, the awards represent the nation’s deep gratitude to Nigeria for standing firmly with Angola at a defining moment in history, offering political, military, and diplomatic backing when it mattered most.


The recognition of Murtala Muhammed, Obasanjo, and Professor Gambari serves as a renewed testament to Nigeria’s legacy of African solidarity, a reminder of an era when Nigeria was a beacon of continental leadership, championing liberation struggles from Southern Africa to the Horn of Africa.


As Angola marks its golden jubilee, the nation’s tribute also calls today’s leaders and citizens to reflect on Nigeria’s historic role in shaping a freer, more United, and more dignified Africa.
