A controversy has erupted at Umaisha General Hospital in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State following allegations that several items donated to the facility by a lawmaker could not be accounted for.
The lawmaker, identified as an All Progressives Congress (APC) representative in the state, expressed anger during a visit to the hospital after discovering that dozens of ceiling fans, standing fans, and orthopaedic mattresses he reportedly purchased and donated for the benefit of patients were missing.
According to reports, the visibly upset lawmaker questioned hospital officials over the whereabouts of more than 50 ceiling fans, about 40 standing fans, and 50 orthopaedic mattresses he said were procured with his personal funds to improve healthcare delivery and the welfare of residents who depend on the facility.
During the inspection, he challenged hospital staff to provide evidence that the donated items were still in use within the hospital. He also expressed disappointment over the condition of patients and wards, insisting that the equipment was meant to ease the suffering of people in the community.
A member of the hospital staff reportedly explained that some of the orthopaedic mattresses had been given temporarily to discharged patients for home use and were expected to be returned after a specified period. The staff member, however, indicated that only a few mattresses were involved, leaving questions about the whereabouts of the remaining donated items unanswered.
The explanation did little to calm the lawmaker, who continued to demand a comprehensive account of all the donated materials. He maintained that the donations were made out of a commitment to improve healthcare services for his constituents and insisted that public institutions must be transparent in handling resources meant for the welfare of the people.
The incident has sparked public concern and renewed calls for accountability in the management of public healthcare facilities. Observers say the development highlights the need for proper inventory systems and transparent oversight mechanisms to ensure that donated materials reach their intended beneficiaries.
As of the time of filing this report, the management of Umaisha General Hospital and relevant Nasarawa State health authorities had not issued an official statement addressing the allegations.
The matter continues to generate reactions on social media, with many Nigerians calling for a thorough investigation into the alleged disappearance of the donated items and sanctions for anyone found culpable.
