On this Democracy Day, I had intended to rest my pen. I wanted to leave the fate written on the walls of history to speak for itself. Wole Oke, Representing AMBO at St. Paul’s Cathedral Synod, Urges Christians to Prioritize Character, Competence and Integrity in Politics
As political activities ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election continue to gather momentum, a message delivered at the 12th Synod of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Gbongan, has reignited discussions on the role of faith, leadership and governance in shaping the future of the state.
Speaking on the theme, “The Role of Christendom in Politics and Governance,”
the federal lawmaker and Director-General of the APC Gubernatorial Campaign Council, Wole Oke, represented the party's governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), during the first session of the synod where the candidate was honoured with the Episcopal Distinguished Merit Award.
In his address, Oke described the recognition bestowed on Oyebamiji as a reflection of a life dedicated to service, integrity, humility and commitment to humanity. He commended the Anglican Diocese for considering the APC flag bearer worthy of the honour.
The speech also touched on national issues, with condolences extended to families affected by the tragic kidnapping of students and the killing of a mathematics teacher in Oyo State.
Drawing from biblical examples, he argued that active participation of Christians in governance is consistent with scriptural teachings. He cited figures such as Joseph, Daniel, Esther and Nehemiah as examples of individuals who combined faith with leadership and public service.
According to him, politics and governance remain critical instruments through which society is organized, laws are enacted, resources are distributed and the welfare of citizens is protected. He referenced constitutional provisions that place the security and welfare of the people as the primary responsibility of government.
Turning attention to Osun's political future, the address urged Christians and other citizens to critically assess those seeking elective office based on character, competence, vision, integrity and capacity to deliver good governance rather than sentiments or partisan considerations.
The message comes at a strategic period when political parties are intensifying consultations ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.
The emphasis on values-based leadership has been interpreted by many as an appeal for greater civic engagement among religious communities in the democratic process.
The synod gathering therefore served not only as a religious assembly but also as a platform for broader reflections on leadership, accountability and the responsibility of citizens in shaping the future of Osun State through informed political participation.
