Osun Govt Raises Alarm Over Alleged Plot to Free Lameco Banditry Suspect, Warns Police Against Political Influence
By OrionTimes News Desk | June 8, 2026
The Osun State Government has cautioned the state police command against yielding to alleged political pressure in the handling of a suspected bandit linked to the Lameco security case, warning against what it described as attempts to secure the suspect's release through unverified psychiatric claims.
The government's reaction followed separate developments surrounding the controversial case. Earlier on Sunday, a civil society organisation, the Public Safety Accountability Group, alleged that prominent members of the opposition APC in Osun State were mounting pressure on law enforcement authorities to facilitate the suspect's release on medical grounds.
According to the group, several APC chieftains were allegedly visiting police formations and making contacts aimed at obtaining bail for the suspect. The organisation described the move as an attempt to undermine what it called a significant breakthrough in efforts to dismantle a criminal network operating within the state.
Responding to public concerns, the Osun State Police Command confirmed that the suspect is undergoing psychiatric evaluation. The command also stated that an herbal practitioner had reportedly been treating the suspect for mental illness for the past ten years.
However, the police statement did not address allegations regarding the involvement of certain APC leaders in efforts to secure the suspect's release.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, the state government warned against any attempt to manipulate security institutions for political purposes.
The government urged the police command to exercise caution and avoid actions capable of weakening public confidence in ongoing security operations or emboldening criminal elements.
Specifically, the government demanded answers to several questions surrounding the case:
- Where is the medical report confirming the suspect's alleged psychiatric condition?
- Who is the herbal practitioner said to have treated the suspect for the past decade, and where is the documented statement supporting the claim?
- Is it true that APC chieftains and their emissaries have approached police authorities seeking the suspect's release?
- Why did the police remain silent on the matter until concerns were publicly raised by the civil society group?
The government stressed that these questions are critical to ensuring transparency and maintaining public trust in the investigation.
It further called on the Inspector-General of Police and other relevant security agencies to closely monitor developments surrounding the case, while urging the Osun State Commissioner of Police to prevent the politicisation of what it described as a sensitive security matter.
"The integrity of law enforcement institutions must be protected at all times, especially in matters involving serious security concerns," the statement noted.
The controversy surrounding the Lameco suspect continues to generate widespread public interest as residents await further clarification from security authorities regarding the investigation and the allegations of political interference.
