Live-streamed polling stations, GPS-monitored materials, and real-time digital reporting can expose election violence instantly, stripping away the cover of darkness where it once thrived.


Across Nigeria, and especially in Osun State, election days have become synonymous with fear. Voters tread carefully, candidates deploy loyalists like field generals, and security agencies often look away. Blood has been spilled in the name of power and worse, it has gone unpunished.


But we are not powerless. In fact, the tools for transformation are already in our hands.

Technology deployed deliberately and monitored transparently can change everything. With live-streamed polling stations, election-day violence becomes visible, not hearsay. With GPS-tracked movement of sensitive materials, ballot tampering becomes traceable. And with real-time digital reporting platforms, incidents can be flagged instantly, triggering swift responses from independent monitors and the media.


This isn’t just about convenience. It’s about accountability. Violence thrives in silence, in dark corners where no one is watching. But when the eyes of the nation and the world are watching in real time, the game changes.


We’ve already seen glimpses of this during recent elections, where online citizen-reporting platforms helped expose ballot thefts and intimidation tactics. Imagine scaling that up with coordinated feeds from polling units, body cams for security agents, and a centralized digital command center accessible to civil society and electoral bodies.


The impact would be twofold: deterring violence and documenting it. Political thugs and compromised officials alike would have nowhere to hide.


Of course, technology is not a silver bullet. It must be paired with bold institutional reforms like holding security operatives accountable and sanctioning political parties that weaponize violence. But it’s a vital start.

To end the bloodshed and reclaim our democracy, we must keep our eyes on the polls, not just metaphorically, but literally.
