The Director General of the Coalition of Nigerian Youth on Safety and Security Affairs (CONNYSA), Amb. Ade Mario, has blamed the rising wave of insecurity and social vices among Nigerian youths on poor governance and the exclusion of young people from critical decision-making processes.
Featuring on the OrionTimes Podcast, Amb. Ade Mario stressed that many government policies continue to fail because the people most affected, the youths are often sidelined from the decision-making process. He noted that policies imposed without youth inclusion often breed frustration, distrust, and insecurity among young people.
According to him, “Poor governance translates into insecurity among youths because young people are not on the round table where decisions and policies are made. You cannot impose policies on people who were never involved in shaping them.”
The CONNYSA DG further lamented the poor level of civic orientation and awareness about governance across communities, noting that the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has a major role to play in educating citizens and bridging the disconnect between government and the people.
“The level of orientation, sanitisation, and awareness about what governance truly means is still poor. That is exactly where the National Orientation Agency needs to come in,” he said.
He explained that many government projects often fail to address the immediate needs of communities because political leaders prioritize party interests above public welfare.
“The community that needs water is given streetlights. There is a need to identify and address the actual needs of the people instead of focusing on party politics because elections have come and gone,” he added.
Amb. Ade Mario maintained that governance would become more effective once leaders begin to look beyond political affiliations and focus on people-centered development.
“When we begin to see governance beyond party lines, governance will become more effective,” he stated.
Highlighting CONNYSA’s interventions across the country, the youth leader revealed that the organization embarked on nationwide sensitisation campaigns last year aimed at combating social vices such as cultism, internet fraud, drug trafficking, money laundering, and drug abuse among Nigerian youths.
According to him, these societal problems are largely products of poor governance and the failure of political leadership.
“These vices are man-made and were birthed as a result of poor governance and the attitude of political leaders voted into power,” he said.
He disclosed that CONNYSA engaged the Office of the Minister for Youth in executing its programmes, with the first national engagement held at the Army Resource Centre in Abuja.
He further noted that subsequent regional programmes were successfully held across different parts of the country, including Osun State for the South-West, Port Harcourt for the South-South, Kano for the North-West, and Gombe for the North-East.
Amb. Ade Mario described the programmes as strategic and resourceful engagements designed to provide lasting solutions to insecurity and youth-related challenges across Nigeria.
