El-Rufai Supports Push for Electronic Results Transmission, Says Manipulation Occurs at Collation Centres



Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, has expressed support for the recent protest advocating real-time electronic transmission of election results, stating that such a system is crucial to reducing manipulation during elections.

El-Rufai said he would have joined the demonstration led by the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, at the National Assembly complex in Abuja if not for his trip abroad at the time. The protest followed the senate’s rejection of a proposal seeking real-time electronic transmission of election results.

Speaking during an interview on Trust Television, the former governor explained that electronic transmission remains one of the most effective measures to safeguard electoral integrity in Nigeria. According to him, irregularities often occur not at polling units but during the collation stage.

He emphasized that the collation centres are the critical points where results are most vulnerable to alteration, arguing that a transparent digital system would significantly curb such practices. El-Rufai maintained that embracing technology in the electoral process would strengthen public confidence and promote accountability in future elections.
