Local government chairmen elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 22, 2025 local government election on Friday resumed duties across several council secretariats in Osun State following a Federal High Court judgment dismissing a suit seeking tenure elongation for chairmen elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The resumption followed an announcement by the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State Chapter, and Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government, Otunba Sarafadeen Abiodun Awotunde, who had earlier directed the elected chairmen and councillors to return to their respective offices.
Among the council chairmen who resumed duties were those of Ede South, Ede North, Iwo, Ila-Orangun, Ifedayo and several other local government areas across the state.
Videos circulating on social media showed PDP Chairman of Iwo Local Government, Hon. Kabir Moshood, popularly known as Irorun, arriving at the council secretariat alongside other officials to formally resume administrative activities.
Similarly, Hon. Nasir Jayeola Adebisi resumed duties at the Ila-Orangun Local Government Secretariat, where he expressed appreciation to residents for their support and pledged not to disappoint the electorate.
At both Ede North and Ede South Local Government Secretariats, party supporters gathered in celebration, chanting "Imole, Imole" as the chairmen resumed office.
Addressing supporters at Ede South, Hon. Shina Sepenteri assured security personnel and residents that necessary measures would be put in place to guarantee the smooth operation of the council. He also urged supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding.
Sepenteri reaffirmed the commitment of the council leadership to peace, legality, and effective service delivery at the grassroots level.
Speaking on the development, ALGON Chairman Awotunde described the return of the elected chairmen and councillors as the restoration of democratic local government administration chosen by the people of Osun State.
According to him, the court's dismissal of the application seeking tenure elongation and the nullification of the February 22, 2025 local government election further validated the mandate freely given to the PDP-elected officials by the electorate.
"The recent court decision dismissing the application seeking tenure elongation and the nullification of the February 22, 2025 Local Government Election has once again reaffirmed the validity of the democratic mandate given by the electorate," he stated.
Awotunde assured residents that the elected officials would return to office with renewed dedication to grassroots development, transparency, accountability, and improved service delivery.
He also commended the judiciary for upholding the rule of law and praised the Nigeria Police Force, traditional rulers, and local government workers for maintaining peace during the period of dispute over the control of local government councils.
The ALGON chairman further advised parties dissatisfied with the outcome of the election to continue seeking redress through lawful judicial channels rather than actions capable of disrupting public peace.
"The court has dismissed their request for tenure elongation and the cancellation of the February 22, 2025 election. Consequently, they have no legal basis whatsoever to continue laying claim to offices occupied by duly elected officials," he said.
Recall that the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, in a judgment delivered on June 15, 2026, by Justice Adefunmilola Demi-Ajayi, dismissed the tenure elongation suit filed by APC-elected local government chairmen, clearing the way for the PDP-elected officials to fully assume office across the state's local government councils.
