Residents of Osun State on Friday staged a peaceful solidarity march in support of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, praising his leadership style, professionalism, and commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state.
The demonstration, organised by the Egalitarian Network Nigeria (eNN), attracted scores of participants who converged at Olaiya Junction in Osogbo before proceeding through major parts of the state capital, including MDS, Orisunbare Market, Old Garage, and Oke-Fia. Despite persistent rainfall, the protesters remained resolute, chanting songs of support and carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Gotan Must Stay,” “The People's Commissioner,” and “Support Professionalism, Swift Response and Zero Crime in Osun State.”
Addressing journalists during the protest, the Coordinator of Egalitarian Network Nigeria, Adejumo Michael, said the rally was organised to counter what he described as unfair social media campaigns calling for the removal of the police commissioner.
According to him, CP Gotan has demonstrated dedication to duty through prompt responses to security challenges and effective policing strategies that have contributed to maintaining peace in the state.
He maintained that allegations against the commissioner were unfounded and politically motivated, stressing that the police chief deserved commendation rather than criticism.
“We saw on social media that Gotan should leave Osun State, and as a human rights organisation that stands for equity and justice, we believe the commissioner is being blackmailed. The allegations against him are false; presently, he is doing well,” Adejumo said.
He added that the group had a history of speaking out on issues affecting the public and would continue to support individuals and institutions working in the interest of the people.
“We came out during EndSARS to make our position known. Now that the Commissioner of Police is working, we are saying yes to him. That is why we are here this morning.
“The people of Osun State and those residing here are covered and protected under Gotan’s leadership,” he stated.
The protesters also used the occasion to call on residents, political actors, and stakeholders to maintain peace and avoid actions capable of threatening the security and stability of the state as political activities gather momentum.
The rally ended peacefully, with participants expressing confidence in the ability of the police command under CP Gotan to sustain law and order across Osun State.
