Former United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director, Robert Mueller, has died at the age of 81.

According to family sources, Mueller passed away on March 20, 2026. His death has since been confirmed by multiple international media outlets, marking the end of a long career in public service that spanned decades.

Mueller served as the sixth Director of the FBI from 2001 to 2013, a period that included one of the most defining moments in modern American history—the September 11 attacks. Appointed just days before the attacks, he played a central role in reshaping the bureau’s focus toward counterterrorism and national security.

Beyond his tenure at the FBI, Mueller gained renewed global attention when he was appointed as Special Counsel to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election. The probe examined links between Russian operatives and the campaign of former President Donald Trump. While the investigation led to several indictments, it did not establish a criminal conspiracy between the campaign and Russia, a conclusion that sparked widespread political debate.

Over the years, Mueller built a reputation as a disciplined and reserved public servant, respected across political divides for his methodical approach and commitment to institutional integrity.
