Several explosions rocked Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, in the early hours of Saturday following reports that the United States carried out airstrikes on the South American nation.
According to CNN, the first explosion was recorded at approximately 1:50 a.m. local time, sending shockwaves through parts of the city and plunging several neighbourhoods into darkness after sections of the capital were cut off from the electricity grid.
“One was so strong, my window was shaking after it,” CNN correspondent Osmary Hernández reported from the scene.
Residents in multiple districts reported power outages, while the sound of aircraft flying overhead was heard shortly after the explosions, raising fears of further military action.
As of the time of filing this report, Venezuelan authorities have yet to release an official statement detailing the extent of the damage or casualties, while international observers are closely monitoring the rapidly developing situation.
