OOPA Seeks Stronger Collaboration With INEC Ahead Of Osun 2026 Guber Election

David Mark, Aregbesola Take Helm as ADC Becomes Opposition Mega-Platform for 2027

 


In a dramatic realignment of Nigeria’s political landscape, former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola have been named the interim National Chairman and interim National Secretary, respectively, of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), now repositioned as the principal platform for a burgeoning opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.


The announcement signals a major strategic shift among opposition leaders seeking to wrest power from President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Former Minister of Sports Bolaji Abdullahi was also unveiled as the interim National Publicity Secretary of the ADC.


A New Political Front Emerges


The ADC's reinvention follows months of backchannel negotiations among influential political figures disenchanted with the APC and skeptical of the sustainability of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as a credible alternative. Key figures in the coalition include Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai, a convergence of political heavyweights spanning ideological divides and past rivalries.


“The choice of the ADC was not incidental,” a source within the coalition told OrionTimes. “It was strategic. The party offers a relatively clean slate and a framework for values-based politics.”


Aregbesola: Time to Restore Ideals


Speaking during his acceptance address, Aregbesola called for a political renaissance grounded in principle and public accountability.


“We must reject transactional politics and rediscover the soul of democratic governance,” he said. “A political party should not be a shell for personal ambition, but a living institution built on values and guided by clear ideals.”




Aregbesola, known for his ideological leanings within the APC before his fallout with party leadership, reiterated the need for internal democracy and national cohesion as the bedrock of any credible political alternative.


The Opposition’s 2027 Calculus


The coalition's adoption of the ADC is widely seen as a tactical move to avoid the baggage associated with older parties, while creating a fresh political brand capable of unifying a disillusioned electorate.


Insiders hint at the formation of a shadow cabinet and policy teams in the coming months, with nationwide mobilization campaigns expected to begin before the end of the year.


If successful, the coalition under the ADC banner could pose the most serious challenge yet to President Tinubu’s political dominance since the APC’s formation in 2013.


What Lies Ahead


While questions remain about the coalition’s ideological coherence and ability to sustain unity through primaries and potential candidacy negotiations, the ADC’s new leadership structure marks a pivotal moment.


Whether it becomes a footnote in Nigeria’s volatile political history or a genuine force for change will depend on its ability to build trust, deliver a clear agenda, and galvanize grassroots support.


For now, however, one thing is clear: the battle for 2027 has officially begun.

Driver Chop Off Vehicle Inspection Officer’s Ear Over Car Particular

  A yet-to-identified Sienna car driver has reportedly bitten the ear of a Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) identified as Papu Prosper.
