Mediterranean Horror: 61 Migrants Lose Their Lives Off Libya’s Coast

 

The Mediterranean has claimed yet another heartbreaking toll. At least sixty-one migrants, believed to be journeying from Libya toward Italy, have drowned after their overcrowded boat capsized off the Libyan coast.

According to aid agencies and Libyan authorities, the ill-fated vessel departed from Zuwara, a known migration point on Libya’s northwest coast, before losing contact mid-sea. Local rescuers later found dozens of lifeless bodies washed ashore between Zuwara and Ras Ijdir, near the Tunisian border.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) confirmed that the dead were mostly African migrants, many of them young men and women hoping to reach Europe for safety and opportunity.

“This tragedy is one more reminder of the lethal risks faced by those attempting to cross the central Mediterranean,” an IOM spokesperson said.

Witnesses say the migrants had been at sea for hours before the vessel capsized under heavy waves. Only a handful of survivors were found.

Social media users have since reacted with grief and outrage, warning others not to be deceived by the glitter of Europe-bound success stories. “Please seek help or guidance before taking this deadly path,” one viral post read.

For years, the Mediterranean route between Libya and Italy has been described as the world’s deadliest migration corridor. Thousands perish annually, often in unseaworthy boats operated by smugglers who vanish after collecting payments.

As one survivor reportedly said, “The sea keeps the dreams of Africa beneath its waves.”
