Japan has elected Sanae Takaichi as its first female Prime Minister, marking a historic milestone in the country’s political history. Takaichi, leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was confirmed by parliament on October 21, 2025, following a heated internal contest and weeks of political uncertainty.



Born in Nara Prefecture in 1961, Takaichi has served in Japan’s parliament since the 1990s and held several ministerial posts. Known for her conservative leanings, she emphasizes national security, economic revitalization, and traditional family values, positions that have earned her both admiration and criticism.


Her election represents a symbolic victory for gender representation in a nation where women have long struggled to reach the highest levels of political power. Japan ranks among the lowest in the G7 for female participation in government, and Takaichi’s rise breaks one of its most enduring political barriers.
