Atiku Pushes Constitutional Power Shift, Vows Rotational Presidency If Elected in 2027

 Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has pledged to pursue a constitutional amendment that would formally establish rotational presidency in Nigeria if he emerges victorious in the 2027 presidential election.



Speaking during an appearance on Prime Time, a programme on Arise Television, Atiku made a strong case for institutionalizing zoning, describing it as a pathway to fairness, inclusion, and long-term political stability.


According to him, embedding rotational presidency in the constitution would eliminate ambiguity around power-sharing and ensure that all regions of the country feel adequately represented at the highest level of governance.


“If I am president, even if it is the only amendment I can make, I would move towards that,” he stated, underscoring the priority he places on the reform.


Atiku further argued that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains unique among political parties in Nigeria for having a zoning framework already enshrined in its constitution. He suggested that elevating such an arrangement to a national constitutional level would strengthen unity in Nigeria’s diverse political landscape.


The proposal is likely to spark renewed debate across the country, with analysts weighing its potential to reshape Nigeria’s democratic structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
