NNAMDI KANU: Sowore Meets Former President Goodluck Jonathan

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, on Friday met with

former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in Abuja to discuss the continued incarceration of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Sowore disclosed that the meeting centered on the urgent need to address Kanu’s detention in a just and decisive manner.

“President Jonathan agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly. I thank him sincerely for recognizing the importance of resolving Kanu’s case in the interest of peace, fairness, and national healing,” Sowore said.

He added that Jonathan assured him of plans to meet President Bola Ahmed Tinubu soon to further discuss the issue.

With this, Jonathan joins a growing list of notable Nigerians who have called for Kanu’s release, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), Senator Shehu Sani, and several others across political and regional divides.

Sowore reiterated that Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention for taking up what he described as “the just cause of confronting the long-standing issue of marginalization in Nigeria,” insisting that, like other politically motivated cases that have been withdrawn or dismissed, Kanu’s case should not be treated differently.

He called on political, cultural, ethnic, and religious leaders across Nigeria to unite in the call for justice and freedom.

“In particular, I invite my brothers and sisters from the South East, Mr. Peter Obi, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, Dr. Alex C. Otti, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, Dr. Peter Mbah, Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, as well as Nigerians of conscience everywhere, to lend their voices to the call for justice and freedom,” he added.

Sowore reaffirmed his commitment to peacefully mobilize for justice and freedom, concluding that “Nnamdi Kanu should be set free.”
