Canadian PM Carney Tells Trump: 'Canada Is Not for Sale'




Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada met with President Trump yesterday in Washington, marking their first face-to-face since Carney’s sweeping election win on a platform sharply critical of Trump.

The meeting grew tense when Trump floated the provocative idea of making Canada the 51st U.S. state. Carney responded firmly: “Some places are not for sale.” Trump, undeterred, quipped back, “Never say never.”

Speaking to reporters afterward, Carney struck a measured tone, saying he felt somewhat reassured by Trump’s attitude toward Canada, though he noted that no concrete agreements had been reached. He described the path ahead as full of “zigs and zags,” but voiced optimism that a mutually beneficial trade deal was still possible.
